Close to the capital of the ‘New Valley’, Tabuna Camp is surrounded by the endless desert and close to the ruins of a Roman Fort, which once guarded the desert caravan route of Darb el Arbain. The area was a crossroads for the caravans, protected by a chain of Roman Forts stretching from Egypt to Sudan. Many fascinating artefacts can be seen in the local museum in Kharga.
The eco conscious ‘tents’ are made out of wood and covered in material, allowing gentle breezes to cool the air. Each is en suite with a private dressing room and
has twin beds (it can be set up as a double). The furnishings are hand made in the traditional Bedouin style. Each ‘tent’ has a sundeck - perfect for watching the stunning sunsets. ‘Tabuna’, the name of the Camp derives from the Egyptian meaning ‘traditional bread oven’, and guests will be able, not only to taste the bread but help in the preparation. There is a bar, excellent restaurant, where local specialities can be sampled, and a traditional Bedouin tent for ‘taking tea’. Food is sourced locally.
The Tabuna Camp is an ideal place to be based to take excursions in to desert following in the footsteps of the ancient caravans; ride a camel into the sunset and to feel close to nature in the beautiful countryside.
