Adrère Amellal – Siwa Oasis

Adrère Amellal is a luxury eco-resort nestling at the foot of the White Mountain in Egypt at the Siwa Oasis. It’s a very special hotel with only 40 rooms built using 'Kershef', a traditional construction method mixing rock, straw and mud.  Palm thatches the roof tops. 

The resort is totally electricity free. This is not a place for mobile phone junkies, TV addicts or laptop fanatics. But, it is a place for perfect contentment amidst beautiful surroundings, impeccable service and delicious food.  It's a place to really unwind and get life back on track.

No electricity at the hotel means no harsh glaring lighting – a myriad of candles and the desert stars light you to bed.  Each room has a view of Siwa Lake and the Great Sand Sea. During the winter months coal braziers warm the cold night air. Each en suite bedroom is unique and furnished in a relaxed style by local artisans, mainly using wood from the palm trunks.

The hotel is situated beside ancient olive and palm groves.  The mainly organic menu is simple yet mouth-watering. Fresh yoghurt, thick date syrup, eggs, local fruit, bread, and coffee start the day.  Clay pots, holding every inch of flavour, are used for cooking the main meals using herbs and vegetables picked from the organic garden. Lunch is vegetarian and served by the poolside, whilst the evening dinner, a meat based meal is served by candlelight in a different place each night. From the resort visits to the famous Cleopatra’s bath, the Temple of the Oracle Ammun, or 4x4 drive into the Great Sand Sea can be arranged.  In 2005 Condé Nast Traveler’s ranked Adrère Amellal no2 on its Green List of Best Resorts.
