The Monasteries of St. Paul & St. Anthony

Located south-east of Cairo, not far from the Red Sea shore, these two monasteries are the oldest in Egypt. St. Anthony, regarded as the father of monasticism, retreated from the world to live here in a cave. The large monastery dates back to the 4th C. Nearby a monastery marks the final resting place of St Paul, companion of St. Anthony; lions reputedly appeared in the desert upon his death to help dig his grave. The various churches within the walls boast wonderful frescoes, still in a good state of repair. A visit is worthwhile even if only to travel to such remote and wild places.
