Luxor

Luxor is the hub of Ancient Egyptian monuments and expanding rapidly as it caters for the demands of the thousands of tourists who pass through. On the east bank of the river, the town is modern and lacking in appeal, redeemed only by its proximity to the Temples of Luxor and Karnak.

Karnak is the largest Temple in the world. The vast 134 columned Hypostyle Hall dwarf visitors, and is an awe inspiring testimony to the genius of Egyptian builders. On the west bank at Luxor is the Theban Necropolis, where ancient Thebans buried their dead. There are a number of fine funerary Temples. Early 'visitors' came to rob and not to appreciate their elaborate decorations! The paintings still hold their freshness and strength after a thousand centuries.
